The Open Philanthropy Project recommended a gift of $825,000 over three years to the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) to support research into the development of a stem cell treatment method for repairing or replacing damaged human livers. The work will be led by Tammy T. Chang, MD, PhD, assistant professor in the UCSF Department of Surgery.
In addition to the potential utility for liver repair, Open Philanthropy's science team is particularly interested in whether the method could have broad applications for repairing or replacing other human organs.
This grant falls within Open Philanthropy's work on scientific research, and was identified through Open Philanthropy's 2016 NIH Transformative Research Award RFP.
